Expert Answers to Your Therapy Questions

  • Overcoming the Hurdle of Your First Session

Deciding to begin therapy is a significant first step. We'll guide you on what to expect, how to prepare, and how to ease any anxieties you may have about your initial consultation.

  • Building a Strong Therapeutic Alliance

The connection you have with your therapist is a key predictor of success. Learn about the importance of this relationship and what to look for in a therapist to ensure a good fit.

How do I find the right therapist for me?

Finding the right therapist is a personal process centered on connection and trust. Look for a professional with credentials who specializes in the areas you need support with (e.g., anxiety, relationships, trauma). Most importantly, seek someone you feel comfortable and safe with. Many therapists offer a free initial consultation, which is a great opportunity to ask questions and see if their approach is a good fit for you.

Is what I share in therapy confidential?

Yes. Confidentiality is a foundational element of therapy. Everything you discuss with your therapist is legally and ethically protected. The only exceptions are specific situations where a therapist is required by law to disclose information, such as immediate risk of serious harm to yourself or others, or cases of child abuse. These limits to confidentiality will be clearly explained in your first session.

What is the difference between various types of therapy?

While all therapy aims to improve well-being, different approaches use different methods. For example, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a practical, goal-oriented approach that focuses on changing negative thought patterns and behaviors. In contrast, Psychodynamic Therapy delves into your past and unconscious to understand how it shapes your present. The best approach depends entirely on your individual needs and goals, which you will explore with your therapist.

How long does therapy take and how will I know it's working?

The duration of therapy varies greatly from person to person. Some people achieve their goals in a few months, while others benefit from longer-term support. You'll know therapy is working when you start to see positive changes. This might mean feeling a sense of relief, developing new coping skills, improving your relationships, or noticing a reduction in the symptoms that brought you to therapy. It's an active process, and progress should be discussed regularly with your therapist.
